Welcome to boutique Hotel Bergs located in the center of Riga, Latvia!

The UK’s issue Tatler’s Travel Guide 2005 has included Hotel Bergs among the Top 10 boutique hotels worldwide.

In its „Hot List 2004” the American magazine Condé Nast TRAVELER features the Hotel Bergs among the 100 best hotels worldwide in 2004.

Opened in 2003, the Hotel Bergs in Riga, a designer boutique hotel located in the Bergs Bazaar, is the newest addition to the Riga’s luxury accommodations. The hotel successfully achieves an ambiance of understated elegance by blending distinctive contemporary design with the architectural tradition of 19th century Riga. It offers a four star+ standard with state-of-the-art conveniences to be expected in a top level hotel in Riga, yet retains the intimacy and comfort of a family home, in which we give each visitor individual and caring attention.

The hotel’s intended clientele are business and leisure travelers visiting Riga for short or long-term stay. The amenities are specially designed to accommodate both overnight and long-term stays, featuring kitchenettes, high ceilings and ample closet space. Flexible rate plans are available.

Constructed on six floors, with a total surface of almost 5000 square meters, Hotel Bergs has 38 exceptionally spacious rooms and suites, ranging from 45 to 80 square meters, in addition to several conference, meeting and entertainment rooms, a library, a cigar room, a fitness center, saunas, a bar and one of Riga’s premier gourmet restaurants under the leadership of chef Kaspars Jansons (formerly chef of Vincents Restaurant in Riga) featuring a contemporary rendition of traditional Latvian cuisine, fused with international accents. The restaurant also provides catering and banquet services.

One of the hotel’s most distinctive features is the glass enclosed conference room on the fifth floor of the hotel. A unique location in Riga, it offers a superb view, lightness of space and fabulous sunsets. This room can hold up to 120 people for receptions and banquets and makes an ideal location for an unforgettable event. The conference room is equipped with state of art audio visual equipment and high speed internet access and can accommodate up to 60 people for seated conferences.

The idea of the hotel in the Bergs Bazaar was first conceived in 1998 by Justs Karlsons, a descendant of the Bergs family, the original owners of the Bergs Bazaar. The hotel was intended as a natural complement to activities of the Bergs Bazaar and a service to the businesses and companies occupying space in the Bergs Bazaar. Actual construction began in spring of 2002. One of Riga’s leading architects, Zaiga Gaile, of Zaiga Gailes Birojs, was responsible for both the exterior and interior design. In almost 10 years of her association with the Bergs Bazaar, Mrs. Gaile has drawn the plans for renovation and reconstruction of most buildings in the Bergs Bazaar, including the “Wooden House”, which was listed by Europa Nostra as one of the 10 most successful restorations of wooden houses in Latvia.  SIA PKE, lead by Raimonds Eizensmits and Anna Kuzane, acted as the general contractor of the project.

Mrs. Zaiga Gaile has been awarded the top prize 2003 for the interior design of Hotel Bergs by the Latvian Chamber of Architecture, and the project contractors SIA „PKE” were assigned the prize for “Best Building 2003” in the category “Reconstruction”.

The hotel incorporates two existing buildings, which underwent complete reconstruction and radical improvement of their infrastructure. Along with the reconstruction of the two hotel buildings, a number of adjacent buildings in the Bergs Bazaar were refurbished. The cost of the project was approximately US $11 million.

The concept behind the interior décor was to produce the environment of elegance and distinction by using natural, traditional materials made in Latvia, with the emphasis on wood and linen. Thus, most of the interior woodwork was custom designed by Zaiga Gailes Birojs and manufactured by Riga companies SIA Vitols and Zile. The linen curtains and bedspreads are hand made by Laima Kaugure’s Studija Naturals, the Latvian supplier of Armani Casa and Calvin Klein. Furnishings include many pieces of antique Latvian furniture, expertly restored by local craftsmen. The front of the reception desk is made from a massive hand sculpted wooden door, which, in the late 19th century adorned the entrance to this very building. The huge white tile fireplace in the lobby is original to the historic building as well, along with other restored fireplaces located in some of the rooms. All of this seamlessly blends with the lobby’s sleek contemporary Italian leather furniture.

The artwork consists of both traditional and modern Latvian paintings. Portraits of the Bergs family by 19th century Latvian painters Janis Rozenthals and Janis Tilbergs as well as 120 works by contemporary Latvian artist Ilmars Blumbergs are distributed throughout the hotel. 19th century relief in marble and plaster by G. Skilters provide a one of a kind mix of contemporary style and the hotel’s history. An exotic touch is conferred by a collection of African tribal art, tastefully integrated into the hotel’s décor, such as the hand sculpted African granary doors, which form the bar and the wardrobe doors.

Celebrating the 2-year anniversary of Hotel Bergs, a new fountain, the first sculptural work by Ilmars Blumbergs, was unveiled in the yard of Hotel Bergs on July 7th, 2005.
